What about ceramic coating the exhaust as well to keep the heat off the shields.

Lots of good tips here. Thanks to all for your inout. ToTbe honest, VHT is sounding like a good alternative. HD sells a set of black shields, but at $250 I'm looking at alternatives

I used VHT flameproof flat black on my mufflers, I'm considering doing my heat shields as well and wrapping the header pipes, and deleting the cat. The muffler paint job has held up well.
