Rear differential oil from heavy trucks with half a million miles or more.... That stink takes some getting used to. New people at my work typically recoil when they enter my warehouse for the first time.
It's the sulfur and phosphorus content in gear lube that stinks so bad. Limited slip additives like Ford's XL-3 are even worse. Don't get that stuff on your clothes. You may as well burn them, the smell is never coming out.

I try not to as much as possible but when my job is to tare rears apart all day its dam near impossible. Some days I'm just bathing in it. Lucky for me I have supplied uniforms so its not my cloths getting ruined. Hunting is impossible now. They smell me a mile away. Trash trucks are the worst.....
I have a few Harleys and one old Indian from the 40s and 50s there is a distinct smell when you walk into the garage.. 60 wt oil with some old gasoline yea you either Get it or you don't ..
If the smell of old Harley dealerships could be reproduced I would buy a gallon. Don't know what made that smell but all the dealerships had that same smell. Instant you walked in the door you identified it as Harley-Davidson.

Yup poor lighting and creaky wood floors...those were the days ha ha
That chamber and plugs have the look of a motor that was never properly broken in (rings never sealed right, and was never run hard enough to burn all that crap out. I believe you when you say its an oil burning pig, plenty of by-products there to prove it.

That's what I'm thinking as well...cylinders still have the cross hatch from the hone. If anything I understated the amount of oil I added putting 1500 miles on to the 5000 it currently has . so yeah..an oil burning pig for sure.
