Why is Harley riding on a decline?

^^^ About the only way to know how many bikes Indian makes is by recall numbers. They had a recall of big twins a while back. The number of total units was pretty small.
EDITED TO ADD: I was responding to ford13 before the Indian guy posted.

This old thread goes from "Why aren't Harleys selling so well, to" those Polaris guys are not selling many but they sure have me worried". Not everyone desires a Harley. There was a time when you could assume the metric guys couldn't afford a Harley. But the guys buying Indians, BMW's, Wings and such can afford the Harley. People find different things that they like.

All you have to do is look on their store to find an assortment of "deluxe vintage garbage" pandering to the folks who think this company is the same thing as the one started in 1901.
Harley is the real deal, Polaris is something folks buy "when they want something other than a Harley", but still want a Harley.

This sounds like the shop I go to. They just added a pool table to the "showroom". That just means fewer bikes to pick from. It's a small dealership to begin with, now it's even smaller. It wouldn't surprise me if they closed up this year.

Ford, I have to respectfully disagree with your premise. I think most big Indians are second or third motorcycle purchases. The guys I've talked to are ex-Harley, Yamaha, and other brand owners. They wanted something different and like the Indian. They like the handling, ride, and they're not concerned that Polaris bought the name. It's basically a Victory Cross bike with different tins and pushrods.

Yep I am on my 4th and 5th Harley and have a RK and Ultra, I can buy what I want. Ford is straight drunk on the HD kool-aide, people like that are why HD doesn't improve their quality. Why should they, Fords will buy anything with HD slapped on it... Whether I buy an Indian or not, I'll still have a Harley in the garage. Hell, maybe I'll go get that fast BMW bagger, mmmmm, so many choices.
