Like I said above, how would you install the seals with the cowbells on? The manual says put it in a vise. If that wasn’t necessary then why would there be a Harley tool to do the job? I could see where it might be different on an FXR or something without cowbells. At any rate I found a vise already
I picked up a stock lower tree from a wrecked bike for $20 and clamp i tin the bench vise and use the stock tube clamp on the lower to hold the tube I'm working on.
Like SBates said, the triple tree is the best vise available, and it's free. Just break the top nut loose before loosening the triple tree pinch bolts. Bottom bolt can be loosened/removed with an impact. Loosen the triple tree pinch bolts and slide the fork out. Do what you need to do and reverse the process. Easy peasy.
