Ya know, this is a pet peeve of mine. There is no such thing as a "fast lane". But if there were, it is only applicable to the open stretches of multilane highways between cities, such as the interstates. Within the cities, however, the inside lanes are "through lanes", not "fast lanes". Traffic that is exiting or entering the highway use the outside lanes and traffic that is not getting on or off the highway uses the inside lane. This keeps traffic moving more smoothly while traveling through an urban area.
But people seem to accept the idea that the inside lane is for going over the speed limit and "hot rodding".
