New Sportster Being Released ?
#141
When we were shopping for my wife's Scout, the salesmen all wanted to compare the bike to the Sportster. This was not a good selling point for my wife.
I've got a Sporty, and she doesn't like riding it. Since she was upgrading her '02 V-Rod, I was selling her on lighter weight, better handling and ABS brakes. She loves her Scout, and hardly rides the V-Rod anymore.
There's probably going to be a new Sportster, it's clearly time for an upgrade. I wonder if it's cast in concrete that the new engine be liquid cooled and OHC? I for one hope not. A Sportster without 4 cams and pushrods just wouldn't seem right.

But wait... Doesn't the V-Rod smoke the Scout? The V-Rod's HP/TQ numbers dwarf the Scout's, no? Yet she prefers the Scout?

Cycle World says the Scout is 3/10 of a second slower over the quarter mile as well. Fortunately, very little of our riding is full acceleration blasts over short distances.
On the other hand, a metric that does matter to us as we tour is MPG. Amazingly, the Scout has been averaging in the high 50's.

Then why do you care how much HP the bike has? Your Sportster has all the power you need to tour this country. (friend of mine has done it for years)
*Side question....why does your wife ride a V-Rod/Scout if you're on a Sportster?

Taking things to the extreme...
Do whatever you want... Free country and all that. Hot Rod for Hot Rodding sake. If that's your thing... No problem...
In my mind though... There is a rational limit.
Wonder what the cost would be to get a Harley to the point of not getting it's *** handed to it by some kid on a run of the mill, used, stock GSXR that can be had for a song?... If even possible...

In 1972 I rode a XLCH from San Francisco to Kentucky. I'm well aware of the touring capabilities and limitations of the Sportster.
