Wrong!

Even though you're buying a car from out of state, you'll pay the sales tax to the state in which you'll register the car—i.e. your home state. ... Your state's motor vehicle agency will advise you on specific sales taxes; however, some states provide tax calculators online for extra convenience.

Is it possible that you have been speaking to the wrong person at the dealership? Collecting and keeping excess sales taxes is a serious matter. Neither Louisiana nor Utah would be happy if that was the case. The dealer knows this. My suggestion would be to try to speak to the GM, failing that, send him a registered letter. You'll get your money back.

ill happily admit im off base, and wrong per the internet site dmv.org but Louisiana has a use tax in addition to sales tax and a quick remittances for sales taxes. its doubtful the dealer has the funds.

attached is a pdf of the regs.

The fact that the out of state dealer remitted or facilitated the tax amount in ykur home state is of little concern.

the difference you seek for refund, is not due and in fact has a high probability of being paid to the state of Louisiana if the bike was delivered there.

if you bought tbe bike online and had it shipped to Utah then delivery bevomes even more of a challenge being that it could be based on the shipping terms, the sales contract, the transportation company, etc.

You generally need to understand these items before signing the sales contract otherwise you could miss out on a opportunity.

i learned as you have the hard way during my late 20s, on a car transaction in California.

Buyer beware is definitely the watch word if you are not versed in multi state transactional contracts
The part I put in bold in incorrect or atleast has not been my experience. I live in MS and have purchased two of my new HDs from dealers in LA (neither was BR HD) on both I paid no tax in LA but paid in MS at the time of registration

That dealership seems to have really gone down-hill since the current owner took over a couple of years ago -- I've heard/read (Facebook) lots of adverse comments from former customers and members of former (now defunct) HOG chapter. Personally, I'll go in and drink their coffee, eat their food, but don't think I would buy a bike there.

I would echo the advice to contact the State Attorney General, if for no other reason than to get an accurate read of the law.

Looks to me like they're over charging for tax,and hoping the buyer won't notice. But,when I bought a bike in Wisconsin, they handed me the title and I rode it home. It was up to me to get plates and title in Illinois, and pay the TAX,in Illinois.
