I remember when the FXR came out. People said they looked too much like Japanese bikes.

My first new bike was a '92 FXR. I loved it because ti was a Harley. the EVO motor was fantastic and it did ride nice... But, I always struggled with that weird triangle in the center of the frame. I admit, I like the older bikes. I like rigid frames. I like the slope of the frame and the straight line from fork head to rear axle.

But, that superglide ran great and rode smooth as could be!

I picked up a 1980 FLT a few years later (8 or 10?) and loved it. Again, a lovely riding motorcycle that handled beautifully. But, I struggled with it's big plastic sidecovers and kept trying to hide the fact that it had those things. I finally sold the FLT after having owned it for almost 20 years....

Because I had the opportunity to buy what I had wanted since they hit the streets, a Softail. Mine is a '14 Slim. It rides darn close to as good as the FXR did. Not quite as smooth as the FLT did. But, it has a lot more power than either and I love it.

I really am a traditionalist, though. I still want another rigid frame bike with a springer front end. I am also weird in that I don't need it to go fast. I just like to putt. While I appreciate the advancements in technology, I am not really sure I like the looks of the new Softails. Maybe I'll get used to them, like I did the idea of fuel injection and twin cams... I dunno. We'll see. But, right now, they are not my thing.
