I ended up buying one of the last 2017 models which I also thought had softer suspension and rode better which will suit the sort of riding I will be using the bike for i.e. touring. I think the new M8 models have been designed to try to compete with the likes of Ducati.

I fully appreciate that regulation is changing the internal combustion engine so I know manufacturers have their hands tied to some extent when designing new models. I guess we should be thankful the engines still look air cooled.
The whining/whirring noise lessens after several hundred miles. Not sure how much it will reduce as the bike beds in as mine only has about 800 miles on it so far. But if definitely reduces. Right now, mine reminds me of a 250cc Honda 4 stroke dirt bike a friend used to have in the early '80s. Needs new pipes or slip ons at least.

As for the suspension - maybe the preload was set too high if you found it too firm.

Wife wanted a bigger bike. She so happy with her Scout she bought a 2018 Cheiftan. She is just not attracted to the HD’s.

Set of 3/4 drag pipes will take that wining sound away. might sound pretty good too with a set of high lift cams and some fishtail end caps. That would be my setup. i wonder if that would be louder than a vrod with force pipes wfo

My pleasure, sounds backwards, but think of it as lowering a bike by raising only it's wheels. The bike either drops or learns to hover

the balancers are driven by straight-cut gears, which are noisier than helical gears.
