Having grown up laying brick and block, Stro1965 is correct. However the block are only approx 7.5 inches tall and the 1/2 inch motor joint per course will give you an eight foot ceiling for 12 courses, usually the total courses laid on the footing is 13, then you have 4 inches of stone and 4 inches of concrete for the floor leaving you 8' total for the ceiling height. Unless the code calls for a cap block.the you can add four inches to the ceiling height.
