Wind?
Did your baffles fall out over a pothole?
Passenger?

...maybe address that issue before wasting your money on things that plug your ear-hole.

 

Wind noise! It'll do more damage to your hearing than pipes. And of course ear plugs are great if you have a passenger that never shuts up. lol I wouldn't say spending $10-$20 is a waste of money. Cutting out that wind noise makes for a much more pleasant ride, especially on long rides. Best $20 you'll spend.

 

How far to do the SureFires stick out?

After reading a couple of these ear plug threads and getting a new Nolan N44 helmet I've been experimenting with ear plugs.

For me, the reason is that the N44 acts like a bell and amplifies the low frequency drone of my exhaust when I have the face shield down (plus I wanted to reduce the wind noise).

I tried the foam inserts, but I don't like the pressure they exert in my ear and they block out too much ambient sound. I picked up some Fents the supermarket - the swimmer plugs that look like gum drops and the ones that look like the SureFires (total cost $5). Both require a little maneuvering to get them in the right position.

The ones that look like the SureFires stick out way too far for me and it's hard to get them in the right position, then put my helmet on so they don't move. The gum drops work better, especially if I leave a little opening at the top of my ear to let in a little sound.

Either way, the difference is very noticeable at the end of my ride - much less ringing in my ears and no wind-noise fatigue, so thanks to all on the forum for this information.

I'm guessing the EP3's don't stick out as much since they are only double flanged vs triple flanged on the EP4s?

 

I don't wear my SureFires with a full face. They don't stick out too much but the filter part is not soft and it puts a little too much pressure on my ears, at least it does with my helmet. I use the soft foam plugs with my full face and it works well, but I see you don't like those. Maybe those custom fitted ear plugs that mold to the shape of you inner ear would work best for you.

 

Thanks for the feedback. I may try the EP3's before I go custom and if they don't work with the full face for me either, I can always use them with my half helmet and when I mow the lawn.

 

I wear surefire EP7s with a full face and they fit just fine. The plugs are just flush with the outside of my ears. I wear an Arai with pretty good size ear pockets, and even with intercom speakers in my helmet I don't have any interference issues at all.

 

In my case and my wife's, they do not extend beyond the ear. In other words, they don't stick out at all for us. After double checking, I use the SureFire EP-5 medium size.

 

i wear custom molded plugs every time i hit the highway. in town, i go without. it's the wind that is bloody crazy.

i don't know what they cost tho, i had two pairs made for free. my wife is a hearing aid specialist (audiologist) who works at a hearing aid clinic.
i think they usually run around 90 bux a pair.

best plug i've ever used, i can't stand things in my ears. especially those ipod earbuds. but these are a perfect fit.
i have the string fixed to mine so when i pull them out to go into a store, they just hang around my neck.

i got one black pair, and one orange pair.

 

Bought a set of Ear Peace prior to the Sturgis Rally this month. Totally satisfied. They come with two different filters. I'm using the lower db filter and haven't tried the higher ones. At this point I haven't felt the need to
