I worked for a Harley dealer. Every new and used bike went out the door with a Battery Tender pigtail installed. Nine times out of ten we sold a Harley branded or a Battery Tender to the customer.
Just run the pigtail from the battery to the rear under the seat, and lay the plug on the rear fender. No heat problems. Look at the engine. All kinds of wires around. No wires melting from the heat.
One thing, when taking the cables off the battery and putting them back on. Make sure not to touch the frame with the wrench. I've seen a wrench get welded to the frame.
Warning :The rider's safety depends upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury.

I've had 2 brand new Harleys, both bought from separate dealerships in the STL area. Both of them installed the pigtail in the exact same place:
That thing sits maybe 3" from the rocker cover. If there were any issues with it melting, the dealers wouldn't be installing it there...
OP, please stop worrying about this stuff, and just go out and ride your bike. It's a Harley, and it's not as fragile as you seem to think it is.

Waht year is your bike? Was it purchased from the dealer. Not to get hung up on that but they usually toss one on there, the pigtails are like 3 bucks. Even my metric dealers put them on.
Anyway mine poked out the side similar to the picture above, left side. It was ziptied and hung a few inches back from the rear jug.
