Default Michigan Helmet law repeal ideas

As we all know Michigan is one of the few states that has a helmet law . There was a rally in lansing & about 100 bikers came to protest the helmet law, the propsal is $100a yr for a permit to ride w/o a helmet, you mustbe at least 21, been riding for more than 2 yrs, have at least a $20,000 personal injury insurance plan & passed a safety class (you need to do this to get a CY endorsement anyways) is $100 for the privelege to ride w/o a hewlmet too much? what do you guys think?

That actually sounds like extortion to me. Is the added fee being used for anything other than to pad the government's budget?

Interesting. What incentive does the gov't have to keep the helmet law? If you are going to lobby against it, you'll need something to offset their gain - right, wrong or indifferent - that's reality.

edit: the more I think about it, the more I agree that it is ridiculous for you to have to pay extra for a freedom. Either all riders get it for free or they don't. I'm not an advocate of not wearing helmets, but I don't believe in gov't extortion either!

The incentive they have to keep it is all the protest coming form the other way, Granholm already vetoed it once, this is just being thrown around, not at all official

Id wear my helmet anyways most likely, i go to states that dont have a helmet law all the time i still think its BS that the gov can say you need to wear it, same w/ seat belts

Personally, I don't think it will pass. Granholm squashed it last year. I doubt she'll do it for the money to pad the government's pocketbook.

There's also no provision for enforcement, so you'll only get tagged if you're stopped for something else.

I think ABATE should be ashamed of backing this one!

How about the added revenue from increased motorcycle registrations. It's a proven fact that helmet law repeals result in increased revenue from registrations and vehicle taxes.

If MI taxes helmetless riders, how long until the helmet/free states catch on and start their own tax. I think it's bad precedent.
