Should there be a gasket between the head
pipe and the heads? When I changed my stock pipes all I found was a retainer ring....Shouldn't there be a gasket?

Yep, there is. It is a graphite gasket that fits into a recession in the head at the exhaust port. You have to look real close because it blends into the head due to it's color. It is a soft gasket that conforms to the flange on the pipe. I think if you look closely you will see it.

Will show what the gasket looks like when its out of the port, it sits into the notch in the port pictured below.
You can dig it out with a scribe or the tip of a sharp knife.
