One thing I know, they're on the vast majority of the bikes out there...but not mine.

 

I love 'em, but mine aren't crazy high, either. Had narrow 14"s before I did the FL front end, when I decided to go with wider 12"s.

I'm an orthopedic wreck & my back is jacked, from top to bottom. 12"s sit me up perfectly straight, with hands at shoulder height. No back or neck pain, no shoulder pain & no numbness in my hands.

Are apes ideal for strafing apexes? Highly unlikely, but those days are long behind me & I used much different bikes for those purposes. They are, however, all-day comfortable for me & perfect for my tastes & riding.

 

On my Fat-Boy, I have tall drag bars and like them.
On my Fat-Girl, I have Apes and I like them.
Best of both worlds.

I have 20" apes on my Street Glide and they allow me to sit up straight and my hands are just a hair above my shoulders. On the Super Glide I have 12" apes that are much narrower and allow for more fun in the twisties.

 

Mine are only 14", I could probably go to 16" but for me, no higher. To quote a member on here from a while back.
