Well, they may be loud, but car stereos are too, so that makes it ok.

Yes they do, and I have used them to protect a fellow rider. A friend was riding in front of me when a woman on a cell phone (is it always the case) started to pull over into her, I raced up close enough and reved my bike, made her jump on back into her lane, I think she pissed herself.

I don't see how there can be an arguement that if a motorist hears your motorcycle it will make that person more aware of your presence. It is my opinion that this should be done without being obnoxious in order to have the maximum value. I see cagers react to the sound of my bike in a good way quite often. It is just one more way to help them not kill me. Does it make my bike more safe? It is just one more item in my overall attempt to keep the chrome pointing up. Modulating headlight, Extra brake light, good riding skills, sensible riding attitude, etc. Any one of these items only has to save my butt once to be well worth the price of admission.

It is not a trick question, but the question was not "do they save lives," but rather "do they make you SAFER." Safer is a relative term. No one here has suggested (I don't believe) that loud pipes are a Substitute for good riding skills and awareness of your surroundings.
Loudpipes (RE: pipes you can hear from further than 5 feet away) are but a piece of the puzzle as it might relateto safety. Idon't think we can ever knowtruly if pipes help or not, since all of the responses have come from living people. What I do know is that many times, my first awareness of a bike in the area has been the soundof the bike.
Do they save lives, hard to tell for sure. Do they possibly make you safer, I think it could be argued that they do make you safer on some level.
As far as making enemies of other drivers...that ranks pretty low on my list of caring. They don't like us anyway, and I'm not about to appease a bunch of folks that don't like me anyway, regardless of my pipes. Does anyone really think that most car drivers are going to like us anymore or less by the noise we make.
This is all just my opinion.

Depends on where your at, some of them natives get pretty restless and pissed at loud pipes, but generally I think they at least make you heard on the highway by that individual talking on there cell phone.

Ok try this on for size about loud pipes.... we race Baja on atv's.
When that throphy truck is closing in on youat 100 plus mph and we are doing 60 ish mph).......you never hear the exhaust...... you hear the horn blasting away....
OR if they are good, you see the chase hilo hovering backwardsin front of you with the pilot pointing to move over.
