Well, they may be loud, but car stereos are too, so that makes it ok.

Absolutely Tootly. My Pipes aren't overly Loud, But the other DriversDo hear me coming. As far as,excessive throttle usage at stop lights itdon't bother me. If you are paying for the fuel, Rev on , Brothers and Sisters...Ride Safe and Often...BearC.Paw.....

Nope.
Even though I have a thunderheader on my street/srtip bike I ride more miles on my all stock Honda sport tour bike.
Never had a need to be loud on it.
I ride in congested city traffic all the time.
I make me safe.............not my pipes.

If one belives the myth that according to a respondent in the HD Enthusiast to a heavily edited comment about DELMARVA Bike week and loud pipes, (edited out; rappingup pipes at stop lights), not only do they save lives probobly, but to paraphrase;
That's what a bike run is about. If a motorcyclist wanted to hear a radio, he should be driving a car. That's what 36 years of riding experience told one of them.
Anyway, imo, when the noise level exceeds common sense and driver or rider habits and need for self expression begin to 'make it difficult to hear the emergency sirens' maybe something will change.
just a thought from a guy with only a few years of Harley riding, but from someone whose been riding and commutting for a bit longer.

Just because a startled cager looks over at you when you rap your pipes doesn't mean they just saved your life. It means you frightened the driver and knocked down the popularity of motorcycles another notch.
I prefer using my head (brain) to save my life. There's no guarantees but it's worked over 65 years so far.

All I know is when I'm driving my car and I hear a cycle coming I pay more attention or lets just say I know the bike is there because of his/her loud pipes. I'm guilty of pulling into a lane where a cycle was driving becausethey were in my blind spot and the bike was quite. I've neverpulled in front of or into the same lane witha bike that had loud pipes. I believe this goes for most drivers, so I say Yes it helps.
