The stretch on 44...anytime below 1/2 tank, top off your gas at the first opportunity, and carry water. Never had a problem, but that is NO place to break down. Always about 100 degrees, and no trees. Your bones will be bleaching in the sun by the time they find you.

This for sure. I took a couple other small backroads from SW Iowa up to 18 then took 44 across and loved it. Definitely a great ride with open areas with little help!

Go through Iowa and you risk missing the Spam Museum in Austin. I can't imagine why there would be any question about the route.

Right, and then you can hit the corn palace in Mitchell.

Went by the corn palace at 75mph, good enough for me but make sure you stop at Wall Drug Store in Wall S.D. and do the loop through the Badlands

From Chicago, I-90 is really not the worst option, for your first time. All the bikes on the road with you and the scenery (again if you have never been) is pretty amazing and really builds up the excitement to get to the rally. And yes all the kitchy side road attractions can be fun (Wall Drug anybody).

I might suggest 90 out and one of the small roads as suggested for your return trip. The ride home tends to be not as much fun, so maybe a more scenic and slower route may ease the pain of leaving Sturgis. Good luck.

Good thing you didn't get a ticket, I think the speed limit is only 25 on main street.

If I remember correctly, the Interstate passes in front of it. That's why I said 75, i would never break the speed limit

Nope, you have to get off the highway and find it, real tourist trap not a quick on and off experience.

I had never heard of Wall Drug till now. I looked it up and it is a pharmacy museum and traveler's chapel? The huge rabbit with antlers in front of the building looks like fun.

From their website:
"One of the world’s most well-known tourist stops, it’s hard to believe Wall Drug Store got its start with something we wouldn’t even turn our heads at today … the promise of free ice water. But in fact, the Husteads turned free ice water into a million dollar idea with a little determination and quick thinking. Read Ted Hustead’s story about the genius behind what made Wall Drug Store into the road side attraction we love and celebrate around the world."

You can't help but stop after seeing billboards for 500 miles. It takes up almost a whole block.
