can you replace the starter clutch itself or do i have to replace the whole unit?

Sounds like the starter clutch or sometimes called the bendix unit.

You can replace the pinion or "bendix" and you can replce the ring gear. Eithe one would be alot cheaper than the complete starter. If it's the ring gear, replacing the starter won't fix the problem.
