1 is too many in my view. My brother got caught when he was 21 and had to go to some kind of classes. There was a guy who was in his class that would go in with shackles on escorted by the police if I remember correctly. It's been many years.Turns out he got drunk and drove home and passed out in the driveway. His wife woke up in the morning and saw his truck, but he was not in the house. She walked out of the house and started screaming and woke the guy sleeping in the truck. He had hit and killed a guy and the guy was stuck in his big brush guard on his truck.

One is to many, I didn't find that out until after three. Although scattered over a few years. Drinking and Driving didn't mix for me. It can get quite expensive , Depending upon the state your in, not to mention the Judge you stand before. I guessI learned my lesson without hurting myself or any one else....Ride Safe and Often.....BearC.Paw.....

In my younger, dumber years, I would go to the club have a few probably too many and drive home. Noticed I said DUMBER. Like alot of people never got caught, was lucky etc. Having said all that. One is too many. Just to much at stake for all concerned.

Think about this. The legal limit in louisiana is .08 , and about to go to .05. That is not even one beer. I think you should be able to drink a couple of beers and still be able to drive . I dont think that you should be drunk and drive , but you are still very much aware of your surroundings and very alert after two beers. That goes back to the money racket , they are only worried about the money. Everyone has there own opinion , so I figured I should put in my .02
Any LEO's know how many beers will put you over .08?

My son was charged with DUI in 1999. He asked me to loan him money for an attorney. I didn't know about the several other moving violations he had at the time until I met for a consult with my son and a prospective attorney. I had to let him fend for himself with a public defender. He got 18 months in a Virginia county jail. He was released in summer of 2001 and was picked up again for DUI and driving without a license and high speed chase. Once again, public defender and he is still in a Virginia DOC until fall 2008. Though he is my only son, I have to agree with the law on this one. He did it to himself several times over.

I got two back in my early 20's. Did a lot of DUI (booze and drugs) over the years. Fortuneatly for everyone that crossed my path, I did no harm. I look back at those days and almost shudder at the number of times I put others at risk.
I'm sober now, and don't have to worry about putting others at risk like that anymore.

I agree with most of what everyone here has said. Penalties should be stiffer, more consistency across the board is required, etc. Although not an active participant anymore, I went through AA for a while as I sobered up, and it worked for me. All the DUI's in my area end up going to AA as a part of their sentence, and I tell ya, its not effective at all. AA worked for me, there aspects of it I disagree with, but thats my deal. What I know is that for court sentenced AA attendence, its a waste of time and money. The folks there four court reasons sit in the back, don't participate, basically they are just there to get their card signed.
I guess if it helps one out of 100, then it did something, but that other 99 do their deal and get right back out there

Its sad. Booze in general is so destrucive to so many people... it really baffles me that it is legal, and pot isn't. I'm not saying pot should be legal or not, I am just drawing comparisons between the two and how ironic it all is.

I posted twice so this subject wouldn't get lost in my first post....

You know what really gets me going about all this? This damned "click it or ticket" BS that keeps coming up on a regular basis. The feds pressure the local agencies to make sure everyone is wearing a seatbelt, or they won't get the federal highway funding they need.... its a freakin' joke man.
This is what our feds have decided is important.... not a real war on drugs, or DUI, or rape, or child molestation.... SEATBELTS!!!!! There are people out there getting dozens of DUI's, etc, and the feds are concerned about you and I wearing our damned seatbelts. Sometimes I just don't get our government, and how they set their priorties.

I hate to be politically incorrect here, but we have been increasing DUI penalties and lowering legal limits and the problem is getting worse.

Maybe we should look at the other end of the problem. You know, before the person drinks and gets in a car, and not after. Right now, it seems like there's no money to be had actually correcting the problem, but there's plenty of moneyto be made punishing the offenders, so that's where the effort is made. More money to be made punishing, so lets increase the opportunity to punish.

If we actually stop the drunks from driving, we won't get all the money, so why do that ?
