If you don't have an owners manual for the bike, get a service manual even if it is a Clymers. Thattaway, you'll know for sure. At any rate, always check the oil shortly after you've run the bike since you need to check it when most of the oil is still in the tank.

Well, i'd love to be able to just buy the factory service manual, BUT I lost my job (eliminated my department) and so i'm just doing all I can to keep my bike at the moment. [&o]

Ok, check it on the side stand, pour a couple of quarts in, plug the hole and run the engine for a minute or so. Check the level again and fill until at the desired level. People say to pour a couple of ounces into the oil filter prior to screwing it on. Only tighten the filter hand tight, not with the wrench. Lube the rubber gasket of the oil filter with clean oil prior to screwing it on. Pretty simple. I understand losing your job, jsut went throught that myself. For the tranny, check it straight up and down, as well as the primary...

It seems like you can't depend on how other bikes are checked. My 2002 Heritage Softail Classic's manual says to check theoil hot with the bike level. My buddy's 2005 RKC says to check it on thejiffy stand hot. I hope someone with a 97 fatboy will answer your question. Anyway,as long as you can see oil in the oil tank, you are not goingto hurt it. I cancheck mine by looking in the oil tank. If the level is at the weld on the filler neck, it isfull.
Good luck,
and sorry about the job and hope you get anotherone soon.
