It is easy to be a fair weather rider. Passionate riders ride all year long. Last year in the Nov. 1 to Mar 31 I did over 14K. The previous season I did over 12K. Much farther behind this year but I am at 5,200 with 1,900 of that this Jan. I ride comfortably down to the teens. 30's and 40's are not even a challenge.
Early in Nov my wife had a stroke so until now when with physical therapy she is doing well and doesn't need me around as much. So it is still possible to at least hit 8 or 9K before Mar 31.
I suspect that my winter riding matches or exceeds the annual average of sun belt riders.

Rode in yesterday, it was 14 degrees! As long as there is no snow or obvious ice, I'm riding.

guitarfish: Gerbing gloves but I use those heat packs for my boots. Just put them under my toes in the sock. For the rest I use layers from thermal underwear to thick parkas.
I limit the heated gear because I have had a fuse go in the past and it was difficult to remove the seat and get to it even if I carried a spare. I relocated the fuse and have a spare. The right amount of layers for me is when I am a little cool is the correct amount. Getting too warm and sweating is not good.
