Default New from NY, looking for advice

Hello all. New guy here thinking of buying a Harley to see if riding is for me.
I figured I'd find a Sportster or whatever locally that needs help or doesnt run to keep my initial costs down and learn the bike.

If anyone has input on weather there's a better way to go about it, or a good place to find used motorcycles, I'm all ears!

Welcome aboard. Many Dealerships have motorcycle riding classes that have smaller bikes there for you. See if there is one near you. That way you won't have to buy right away and see if riding is your thing. Here's a link for more info:

The beginner rider course would be a good place to start. Know anyone with a dirt bike? It's still 2-wheels...

I like cycletrader, but there are certainly other sources out there. A used sporty is not a bad choice. They can be had on the cheap (for a harley), and you can sell it if you decide you need something bigger.

Another option is any of the smaller metric bikes. Reliable, and can be had cheap.

Good luck. Welcome to the forums

Welcome from the central coast of California

If you have never ridden before get a smaller bike to learn the fundamentals. Once you have done that start graduating.

I would also recommend you taking a M/C class.

Good luck and enjoy!

Consensus agreed, start with the basis MC class to get an idea as to what it's all about - then if you find you have the drug in your vain - start with a smaller inexpensive bike to hone your skills - over time your riding skills and desires will lead you to the bike you feel is best for you.

I wouldn't start with a bike that 'needs help' as that is a recipe for many hours of swearing and frustration and could put you off bikes completely ! Go for a Metric to start as they are usually bullet proof [if looked after even a little bit] and a lot cheaper to insure and buy than a H.D, then after plenty practice and motorcycle classes, you will have the 'bug !...b.

Welcome aboard. Good advice here . Take the rider course. You will like it and learn a few points about safety.

Welcome from NC. 100% agree on first step being a M/C beginner riding class.
