Do lollipops help lower exhaust noise?
Hey guys, I am hoping to get some noise advice on some recently added Rush slip-ons to my ’14 Heritage FLSTC with 1.75” baffles. Bike is stock otherwise. I chose Rush because of the low deep rumble which I really like. I find that at higher RPMs the sound is much louder and gets tiring on long rides.
Wearing plugs does help a bit, but I was wondering if adding lollipops to the pipes might attenuate the sound enough to make it tolerable. I’ve read on this forum that lollipops are mostly added to restore some of the back pressure and increase horsepower but wondered if it might help my dilemma as well.
Rush offers 1.5” baffles which I might try next to see if they help a bit. I would rather try the lollipops first if they help because I could probably make them myself and save the 60 or so bucks from the smaller baffles.
Any advice?

Hi TBT3, Lollipops are a circular metal object attached to a metal stem (resembling a lollipop, thus the name lollipop) that is usually attached at the back end of the exhaust system. It restricts exhaust flow thus increasing back pressure. This back pressure is said to increase horsepower.
My interest is in the fact that its placement diminishes the flow diameter of the exhaust orifice and so then perhaps it may also decrease noise in the same way that a smaller hole in a muffler would be less noisy than a bigger hole.
Collectively, the folks in this forum have tons of experience with these sort of things so I thought I would tap into that well of knowledge (grin).

+1 on the Thunder Torque inserts. I put a set of Rush slipons on my wife's Sportster with 2" baffles, and they were very loud with a sort of harsh, high pitched tone. I put a set of the 2 5/8" "Q" inserts in them at about a 20° angle and they quieted down considerably. The harshness was gone and they have a nice, deep tone. Plus, the bike lost a noticeable amount of low end when I installed the slipons that returned with the inserts.

Lollypops will definitely take some of the "bark" out of your pipes. You can make them from thumbscrews, I-bolts or washer welded on a bolt and they are tunable, meaning you can experiment with the angle.
Easy to make, cost virtually nothing and easy to install and tune.
Not sure how the tuning would be with EFI.
