Inviting someone to ride who doesn't ride over 45mph.

Gotta keep up. A couple of years ago my daughter followed me from Ames Iowa to Michigan in her car. We had to drive around Chicago. The speed limit there is 55 miles an hour. She almost got killed. at the first stop I looked her in the eye and told her she had to keep up with me. No one is driving there at 55 mph. Hell at 80 folks are passing me. Completely crazy. She kept up the rest of the way. Now she is good and don't mind driving a little over the speed limit depending on conditions.

This is the approach I would take. I have a couple of buddies that I ride with a fair amount, and one that sounds similar to your relative. Its not that he will not get over 45 because he will but he is just not good at keeping the correct distance behind other bikes. He will have the correct distance a while then before you know it he has dropped 5-10 mph and the gap gets longer and longer. We urged him to keep up over the years but its like he can't do it, so when he is along for a ride its understood that he is going to be the back bike and we are going to ride our ride and can meet us at the next stop

If you are breathless with anticipation then you will die of asphyxiation. The OP's last activity in this forum was December, 2016. It doesn't mean that he doesn't check threads without logging in but that is unlikely.
So, it is my hypothesis that we will never know the current state of affairs with his friend.

It also happens if you have the "Show Related Threads" turned on. You can be reading a post and because a 3 year old post had something similar in it it shows up right underneath the thread you are posting in. It's pretty easy to revive an old thread by mistake. It is turned on by default when you sign up, you have to go into your setting to turn it off.

If you want to edit your settings on phone or tablet you can go to your browser options and click "full site" or "show desktop" (depending on browser) and the site will show up with full options just like a computer. I leave mine that way all the time. I prefer the full site look to the mobile version.

I can tell you a 1000 stories but I’ll spare you on 998 of them:
My first trip to Daytona Bike Week in 2010 we have a experienced rider on a new CVO recently retired from a major auto manufacturer leading five bikes. I’m asked to take 2nd position. Well on the interstate he would be in the left lane then for no reason in the right. We would all change our stagger. This went on for two hundred miles. When we stopped for lunch I questioned him and he said sorry I am just used to riding alone. No big deal we just made it work. Had a great time.
I learned to group ride in the local HOG chapter. In seven years I served as activities officer, safety officer, assistant director and director. I planned and lead rides every year and was good at it. The largest ride I lead was 50 bikes and had 6 key people throughout the group in strategic positions. However what always drove me crazy was that you plan a ride, do all the research, pre-ride the route, know your turns, stops, food, restrooms, etc and have a detailed riders meeting for you start. Then mid ride someone always has a problem with a road or a stop. I did get upset with those complaints because these same people NEVER stepped up and do anything. They were simply followers. But there was this one older hippie couple left over from the 60’s. They always insisted in riding in the back. Well if you just have 10 bikes the people in the bike are running harder. It’s like to are always trying to keep up. I explained that I NEVER went over the speed limit and it they would move to the front it would be easier. Well they would rather argue, complain and be unhappy. Well I got enough and quit the HOG chapters. But on our ride to the wall in May guess what. Yeah this couple that we had not seen in five years shows up to ride with our Rolling Thunder Chapter. Then they wanted to ride behind me for some reason? Well we rolled up on I-77 North bound and I passed about six bikes and settled in behind our chapter President and we rolled. Yeah they were pissed at me the first stop. I explained I was not here to be their escort in as nice a way as I could.
