Default Too rich mixture?

Seems like I have strong exhaust smell when I stop at a light or stop sign. The inside of my exhaust is black with carbon. I checked my plugs and they look good and tannish white. Should I adjust the air/gas mixture at the bottom of carb make it a little leaner?

No I'd leave it. My pipes are sooty inside, too. As long as there's no bogging, hesitation or bad plug readings, you're good. I'm running a S&S Super E on my Evo.

If you have a strong exhaust smell, check for an exhaust leak. If your plugs read good, your mixture's probably good.

If you only notice it at idle, might try leaning out the idle mixture a bit. Check that the float valve is closing at the right level. Too high could cause a rich at idle state.
