Extended warranty? Worth it?
#23
i have a friend that is retired and rides every day locally and makes multiple trips nationwide and down to baja and Cabo every year
he buys the extended warranty when he replaces his bike approx every 5 to 7 years.
his average mileage is approximately 30 to 40k per year so he uses his bike ( primary transportation).
he explained to me, he wants piece of mind and the 50 ded. he does not modify his bike at all.
his out of pocket on his last bike after the 2 year warrenty was less than 500 and he kept the bike for 6 years and when it was replaced due to a distracted driver it had over 160k.
if i was like him and rode this much, i would buy the warranty, if i was a normal rider and rode 20k in 5 years. i would not.

You can almost always bargain down the price of the extended warranty. Did it on my bike and on my truck. It is pure profit for the dealership and the salesperson so they will wheel and deal (lots of markup). Figure out that price where the the peace of mind you get by having the warranty outweighs the worry about wasting your money if you don't get to use the warranty. That is the price that is right for you.
Without a crystal ball to predict the future, all you are paying for is that peace of mind.

This topic comes up periodically. There are 4 opinions about the ESP.
Those that don't buy it and never need it say "I knew it was a waste of money. Glad I didn't buy it."
Those that don't buy it and need it say "Crap, I knew I should have bought it."
Those that buy it and never need it say "Damn, what a waste of money."
Those that buy it and need it say "Man. Best money I ever spent."

That. If the odds were in the buyers favor, the sellers would lose money and hence would not offer the extended warranty.
Think of it this way: You're betting your hard-earned money that your bike is going to break-the extended warranty people are betting that your bike is going to be just fine. Now who do you think has better (actuarial) information or history on the odds of a given bike breaking and needing expensive repairs?
That's right, you just broke the code. Buy yourself 2 years worth of imported beers on what you saved!
