Extended warranty? Worth it?

Statistically speaking it is NOT worth it.
If you graft failures vs time to shoe reliability the curve looks like a bathtub. During the break in period you have high failure rates, infant mortality of parts. Then over the next several years failure are very low.....the flat part of the tub. As time goes on you reach the wear out period and failures start going back up.
Extended warranties cover the flat part of the tub, where failures are at a minimum ....after break in where manufactur warrantee covers but before wear out. In other words it covers the most reliable period of the product.
If you have the money, put it in a mayonnaise jar and bury it. If you need repairs dig it up. If not, dig it up and use it toward your next bike.

I'm looking at new model year first run bike that the EPA has made difficult to modify by a dealer anymore, my plans are to buy it, ride it and pretty much leave it alone and keep the thing till I can't ride anymore so with those working parameters the ESP makes sense for my needs as I'm known for wringing a bike out regularly and breakage is something I'm long familiar with.
Average Joe Everyday guy I'd say it's a waste of money other than that back of the mind feel good thing like carrying a gun everywhere.

I think an extended warranty is good for a: new model motors, because they haven't found all bugs yet, and or b: you can't physically do some of the work if it breaks. I have hips that have been changed out twice, and dealing with a bad right hip until I can't handle it anymore, and cannot crouch or get into positions for extended periods of time to do certain work on my bike. So if it's a larger job, I'd prefer it being covered. But then again it's a double edged sword, because I then have to hope whoever is putting a wrench on my bike is doing the right thing and taking care of my bike. If I was physically able health wise, I would have no problem putting that money aside for parts to do the motor work as needed. And will usually look into the job first and see if it's worth me taking on the project first.

I'll say yes to ESP. I've had it on 4 bikes now. The first 3 times I won. The 4th bike turns 3 next week and so far the warranty repairs covered by ESP equal 1/3 of what I paid for the 7 year ESP w/Tire & Wheel. I leave the bikes stock and average about 20,000 miles a year so it works for me.
