Default Question for Texans

Do cowboy boots make decent riding boots? Mine have all been re-soled and heeled several times with rubber, so they're not slick like leather. I need boots for the MSF course, and my Tony Lama's are all I have on hand (pun intended) at the moment. Will those work or should I buy some riding boots for the course?

If they ain't slick, they'll work fine. I wear a pair of Justin ropers right now. Also have a pair of Victory cowboy-style boots I ride in. Haven't ridden in anything but cowboy or ropers for years.

One thing to watch out for with the cowboy boots is the heel. The rubber tends to wear through on the aft edge and when your putting your foot down you can catch that edge and the slide out from under you. The "biker" boots will tend to have a much thicker rubber on the heel.

In AZ all it says is "over-the-ankle footwear."

I took the course in Dallas a few weeks ago and that is the requirement here also. I did not have riding boots so I wore hiking shoes that went over my ankles. Worked just fine.

I took my course 2 weeks ago and wore my Tony Lama's with the leather soles. It wouldn't have been good if it had been raining, though. They teach the course rain or shine, so if it's raining, you better have rubber soled boots. I bought a pair of Ariat work boots at Cavenders for right at $100.00.

I took MSF at the Honda facility in Irving a couple of years ago and I was wearing high-top Nikes. The instructor saw 'em and didn't give me any grief. (Not that I recommend riding in tennis shoes.)

Do cowbow boots make decent riding boots?
Yep...thats what I wear, and the spurs come in handy when you hit the passing lane.

Redline,

Where did you take your class? I'm in Dallas too and was looking at the one on www.ridercourse.com.

I've seen a couple of Dallas folks on the forum. Makes me feel like I'm home!

BTW - Boot Town Warehouse on LBJ and Josey (?) has a great selection of Harley riding boots. I got mine there. You can definitely feel the weight difference with the additional rubber in the soles/heels. No road is getting through these babies anytime soon!!
