Not a newbie to HD...have had a few, built two from the ground up. HORN BUTTONS!!! Over the years, the HD Horn Button has been an issue. I've practiced locating that Button several times over the years; in an emergency, sometimes I hit it, sometimes I miss and throw a Left Signal!!! I've even hovered my thumb over the switch in heavy traffic just waiting for the dumbass next to me to pull into my lane. Yesterday on my way home, traffic was slowing down rather fast in front of me, and merging into me from the right. Pulling in my clutch and finding the horn button induced sensory overload! My next logical thought was to blip the throttle to get the guy on my right to see me...it worked. Now I'm thinking; there's gotta be a better place for this horn button.

 

I'm always hitting the turn signal too, at least 9 out of 10 times. But I don't use my horn much because it sounds like a kiddy car.

Something else that I wish was in a different place is the right turn signal. Because it's on the throttle side, my thumb isn't always in the right position to use it, unless I let go of the grip and that's not always good since it shuts the gas off to the engine.

Maybe switching the horn to the right side and have both signals on the left side.

 

In a panic I rarely can even think of hitting the horn. I only use the horn to get someone's attention who's texting at a green light.

 

Missing the horn button happens to me all the time to.

I have read on here that this is not uncommon. No matter how long we have been riding.

I've found that in a REAL emergency, I'm too busy trying to take evasive action to worry about the horn. If I have time to use the horn, it's not really an "emergency", I'm just angry for having been cut off.


Around here using the horn is the equivalent of flipping the bird anyway. It just makes the other driver mad.

Yep - go for the horn, activate turn signal.

 

That's a good point. Survive first and then worry about the horn.


Having said that, I have a habit of putting my thumb on the horn button if I see someone with the potential of pulling out in front of me. Not sure if I'd honk or evade or both if they did pull out.

 

I've found if you just put a round through the driver's side window it usually gets their attention. If that doesn't work, stab them. Either are easier than finding the right button when you really need it.
