The 1000 service IS mandatory for warranty purposes. It's not mandatory for them to do the service! You could take it anywhere, or even do it yourself and still be covered under warranty.
Used might be a better deal depending on how you look at it I guess. It would all depend on the price. If they are trying to sell a used 2007 for the same price as a new one, just because it has 1k+ miles and the first service, I doubt it's a deal! If that same bike was bumped up to 103", pipes/Stage 1, etc. for that price, then yes it would be a good deal. It's all relative I guess.

What you are saying makes sense. I have no desire to pay $500 for my periodic services. I am one who follows maintenance schedules, and enjoys wrenching on my own vehicles. I was wrenching on Harley's (my dad's bikes) long before I stated riding them.

I kinda look at it like this. If I were to take my bike in for a 1000mi service @ $325 and then again at 5000mi. Say $300. Thats $625. My cost on oil, filter and labor maybe $100? Thats a savings of $525. If I have a warranty claim that costs say $500 for a repair and they being the stealers they are will not honor the warranty work, I'm still ahead of the game. Just make sure you document everything you do.And I know you all have digital cameras if they need even more proof. Just my .02
