Default Baker 6 OD / motor oil

I have the Baker 6 Overdrive model in my 99 FLH Classic. When you install the tranny you replace the stock oil dipstick/inlet with the one Baker sends you. I just did another oil change including gear oil and I always second guess with the motor oil level on the dip stick so I gave baker a call. I asked them first thing for the motor oil and gear box dip sticks if they need to be screwed in or just sitting on the top of the threads and he said both should be just sitting ontop of the threads and not screwed in and bike standing straight up for " both".
I never knew this and was always checking motor oil with bike on side stand.
What I did was fill the gear box to the full, and the motor oil to half way between the lines, then took the bike for a good run to get oils hot.
Put bike back on lift and sure enough too much gear oil so took some out to bring it down to Full on dip stick. I checked motor oil and it was between the lines so topped it upto the Top line on dipstick.

Now question as it is a concern, for the motor oil should it be filled to the upper line while the motor oil is Hot but at the same time adding cold top up oil?

OK this a motor that is basically using 1943 technology...not the space shuttle. Checking the motor oil with it "hot" and "straight up" is a waste of time and a PITA. Change your oil...put in the correct amount oil in according to the FSM...park bike where you normally park it, on the sidestand...pull out dipstick...make a mental note of where it is, or mark it with a hacksaw...now when you get ready to ride...check it cold on the stand and you will be good to go.

Your bike's Owner's Manual will have instructions for for checking the engine oil level.

Between the lines is just fine. Your motor only needs about 1 quart to lubricate the entire motor (dry sump,) and the rest is just for cooling.

Thanks guys, I could be over thinking it, I always thought between the lines was the safe bet and to the second line was correct and full.Did find it a bit strange that Baker said to check the motor oil with bike straight up but I guess it has to do with their new dip stick.

Lower line is for cold upper line is for hot, If you are between them you are good. It's a 4 quart system and the transmission takes 23oz.
