It wasn't excruciatingly horrific, just a little fast for my taste.

Experience is the best teacher. Now you know what conversation to have with new or prospective riding partners. If you start the pre-ride discussion about the pace and when to stop ect, it makes you the leader of YOUR ride regardless if you end up riding with the others, or alone.
