I use an old washer fluid bottle. It is thin and fits right under my filter. I notch it out on the end and slide my wrench through the hole on the other end. No fuss no mess.
I guess I am just old school.I just slide a drain pan under filter,replace it and then spray area down with brake clean.Easy Peasy plus it cleans the road grime off the lower front of engine.

+1. Been doing it this way for years. Not rocket science!
Doesn't matter what I do, I always think it won't happen, but I end up with oil everywhere. I have a cleanable oil filter, seems to dump easier on removal than the throw away kind.
