I've not had any problems and my trailer sits up high with a steep ramp. I used to carry a 20014 Heritage in it, now I carry a 2016 Street Glide Special. They both go right up and down the ramp no problem at all.

Glad you are a trucker and know first hand about trailer weight, stopping, etc. I drove trucks for over 20 yrs as well and a lot was those evil wiggle wagons. LOL Fun having the heavy trailer in the rear because the dock crew screwed up on the loading info. We all have seen reese hitch campers get all squirrelly on the interstate. If it was me, I would get a 5th wheel toy hauler. I am in the same boat, wife wants a camper. That means I have to trade my Ram 1500 Hemi and go diesel. So 30K for the camper, 40K for the truck. Heck no. I said I will get an enclosed 6x10 trailer and pull behind the Ram and stay at decent hotels. The doggone RV camp sites now with full hook ups I hear are charging like $100 a night. I can hit a good hotel and have a decent supper at a restaurant for that much. If she wants to camp, I have a 2 man tent.

I don't think once we got east of St. Louis I ever made it back to overdrive.
If you are going to be pulling ALL the time you would be wise to get a bigger truck...if you are going to make 2 or 3 trips a year that don't include major mountains there are several lightweight toy haulers that will do the trick.

I go to several bike rallies each year...and know several people that have "lite" toyhaulers and are pulling a touring bike and a golf cart with a 1500 and show up every year.

If you are pulling a big trailer with a half ton...you put it in "tow mode" and don't expect it to go into overdrive unless you are going downhill with a tailwind. If you are towing and it keeps hunting for gears...turn the OD off to protect the transmission, and an aux trans cooler and a weight distribution hitch are mandatory. Towing with the overdrive off doesn't hurt anything but the gas mileage.

Toy haulers that can be pulled with a half ton are small and basic...and with 2 big bikes you will want one that does not have a separate garage...and you can pull one bike almost to the front.

Half ton pulling a fiver. Wife wanted a bigger camper so we went to 3/4 ton. Then she wanted a bigger camper so we ended up with a F350 diesel. After 30 years of camping she decided she had enough and we went to a F150 and a 6x10 enclosed trailer for the bike and stayed at cabins and motels...

We started thinking about getting out of camping when a visit to our daughter cost over $50 a night at the KOA, and that was just electric and water.

KOA's do tend to be a little high. We prefer to stay in state parks mostly.
