I read somewhere (maybe on here?) that it's really not necessary to lube the cables on the newer bikes..anyone else heard this?

Good point, I've wonder about this myself. I know on Cars, The Volvo at least, up till 1998 they all had cable drive and they are never lubed, it's not a maintenance item. The Bike cables work fine in the housing it's in, they are not lubed from the factory. The lube doesn't make them work any better. Maybe it's a rust prevention thing?

My throttle cable isn't lubed. It rides in a plastic (teflon?) sleeve. I do lube the clutch cable, usually with an old solution of graphite in alcohol I made up.

WD-40 isn't a very good lube. OTOH, it's a great Water Displacer.

I just use alittle bit of synthetic gear lube as I typically have it handy. I keep meaning to get a cable dedicated lube but never seem to get aorund to to it - so the gear oil it is.
