Defining "rat" bike

Had a discussion with a group of friends yesterday regarding the idea of a rat bike. We got to debating what makes a rat bike. Especially when we have a "chopper" culture where removing bits and pieces, and modifying for the sake of speed (sometimes style), is a "rat" bike just a rusty bike?

Look like rat bikes to me... Like many things in life, a rat bike is just a label and open to interpretation. The eye of the beholder thing.
That's ok, a little variety in life is a good thing.

I was and I was seeing the that old beater shovelhead 25 plus years ago at midwest parties, that wildman been running the miles forever. Back then he hadn't got heavy with the glued on change yet.
