Okay; here is the story. I was riding eastbound on 1-20 and at the 29mm an extra fuel bottle that was in my right saddlebag 'blew up'. The Highway Patrol said it was a combination of the West Texas heat, exhaust pipes, and contained gasoline that created the situation. When it blew I stopped, got off and realized I was on fire, so I did the stop/drop/roll and was able to put me out. The bike; well, ….
I was life-flighted to Lubbock Texas to the burn unit where I was treated. Had to do skin transplants (from my thigh to my arm) but I am in overall good health.
My saddlebags were cheap and throw-overs, and would have been fine otherwise, but would not stand up to the heat. My extra fuel containers were approved for such travel (metal, sealed) but not for the West Texas heat.
If you carry extra fuel…. consider other options than mine which is not recommended.

Burn ward; Lubbock Texas

MM 29, 1-20 West TX

Holy crap man, I'm glad you made it out of that situation. It could have been a lot worse. Just be careful out there. Glad you will be around to tell this story and live to ride another day. Thanks for sharing and keep us updated on your recovery.

WOW! Holy flying foxes. That really sucks. Sorry to read and see this. How fast were you going? How long will you be in Lubbock Hospital?

I'm glad that you were able to get stopped and off the bike before you got even more badly burned.

Holy F...!
Sorry for your injuries and loss.
Having riden in West Texas myself, I can understand the desire to carry extra fuel.
Good job saving yourself and having the carry on spirit.
Hope you heal well, quickly and are able to recoup your losses.
