I've ridden some pretty desolate areas in this country, and have never carried extra fuel. There's been times when it got really close to empty on reserve, or finally got gas that only had 85 octane (you only put in enough to get to the next station). Seeing what you went through, I believe I'd rather run out of gas and walk. Get well soon.
