I Had This Run Across My Mind
Hey I'm sitting here in my easy chair, drinking coffee, looking at my stock
pipes, and playing on the Forum. I got to thinking about that dad-gum
Y-pipe, I'm thinking, I just want one muffler on the right side. the problem
is I can not in any way shape form or fashion ruin a good Y-pipe, and as
soon as someone has one to crack, or break they throw it away and get a
new one, so there is none out there to get. However I got this bright idea of
making a cap about 2 1/2 inches long that I could slip over the left side of
the Y and clamp it on, I would rattle can paint it with high temp BBQ black.
In your mind would it look stupid enough to laugh at, or would you think it
looked like a good idea?

There's a significant exhaust performance reason for having the two heads connected somehow. I forget the word for it but it's about not allowing the exhaust gas pulled back in between exhaust strokes.
That's why the Y is there,, if they didn't need it they could have skipped it and simply run the rear pipe on it's own.
Your long shot's have a "power chamber",, 2-1-2 to take care of that.
The stock system was designed to have two pipes to allow that volume of air to move,, if you cap one your going to be restricting that systems design by 50%.
You could try the cap,, but I think we'd all see it and wonder why,, ya know?

well you are correct The bike in my post is my bike, and the pipes that are on it are the Cobra extra longs but they are getting the best of me so they are going to be replaced by my stock 07 head pipes and stock 05 mufflers.and after reading every thing I'll probably put both mufflers on until the "Y" pipe cracks and or breaks, then Ill make the choice of whether to cut and close up the hole or try to find and buy a new "Y"pipe.

was to make all the front cylinder, and half of the back cylinder come out the right muffler, and half of the back cylinder go out the left hand mufflerand the reason that I think this is because the right 07 muffler was very heavy with the catalytic converter and the left 07 muffler weights about half as much as the right hand muffler so I'm thinking that if Harley wanted to split the exhaust 50 50 there would be cats in both mufflers. However I've decided to put both mufflers on, the looks of a muffler on each side is starting to grow on me.
