To oil the air filter or not
I have put on the heavy breather onto my bike. I cleaned the filter tonight and it seems that oil should be put on to it. It is the one that came in the kit and from what I remember you are not to oil these. It is kit number 29006-09b. I did not switch over to the k&n filter yet. I wanted to use this one first

I confused, but most gauze filters usually need a light oiling. Although if you do not oil the filter and run it dry, probably would not hurt it much. Remember some people with very high performance motors run velocity stacks, which is no filtering.
I run the Arlen Ness Big Sucker stage II and it comes with the K&N filter that uses oil. You can also get one with a stainless steel jack filter that I believe does not use oil.

If you don't oil it, it's not going to filter at all.
When I used to be a wrench, I recall seeing carburetors with dirt caked on the intake side of them, and a piston and rings literally eaten up by abrasive dust, and a K&N air filter upstream... that the owner didn't think really needed to be oiled.
K&N air filters are GREAT... so long as you oil them as they recommend, but they ain't worth a crap if you don't.
Oil that damn thing like the manufacturer says to!

If you go to harleys website and look at that part number, it says "Note The washable and rechargeable filter uses a special coating to help filter fine particles from the incoming air. With time, the oil in the filter will dissipate and the element will begin to turn gray. The original red color can be restored with an application of K&N Air Filter Oil."
