stupid newbie question - parking your Harley in a city.
Hey all,
Got another stupid question. How do you park your Harley. I am not talking about security, rather, "legally."
- What I mean is, do you park between two cars that have their meters paid and "piggyback" on their dime.
Do you park it on the sidewalk where there is no meter?
Do you park it inbetween the designated lines and take up a whole spot meant for a car and pay the meter?
Do you get parking tickets?
I think you can see where I am going with this question. What is legal, what is illegal on a motorcycle in terms of parking?
Thanks,
B

the only legal way is to take up a whole space and pay but expect other bikes to join you whenever I join I fill up the meter most don't pretty much every thing is illegal some leos won't ticket bikes on the sidewalk but don't count on it wish I could be more help

If you follow the rules like you were driving a car, you'll be OK. If you choose to do something that would be considered illegal in a cage, then you ain't got much defense when the man gives you a ticket. Having said that, I've parked in some outta-the-way spots and never been hassled. I'd never park between a couple cages, especially on their dimes. Sure fire way to come out with a bike crunched.

Howdy, the small towns that are here where I live don't have parking meters. When I go to town, I just park in a normal way just like I would my Jeep.

what's a meter <grin>
I park away from cages.. for sure.. but in a small town its really not a big deal, we have free parking everywhere.
I back in and keep my nose out when I use the street parking lock it up and never had a problem.
Our down town streets have high crowns, so parking on the street leans the bike to the curb to much, a good push would knock it over. Backing in takes that out of play.

Parking meter? Don't believe that I am familier with that term.

I'm pretty **** about keeping legal...I'd rather spend money on my bike, or eat than pay a ticket in San Francisco where the parking is really a bitch. That being said however, I've polled a few cops here & they've told me they wouldn't give a ticket for parking in between cars because it's hard for them to know who was there first & legally you are supposed to take a whole spot, but parking being what it is here, it would cause more commotion, plus they have better things to do. But don't park in a non parking place ...the meter maids will ticket you. Up on the sidewalk? I know some neighborhoods that allow it but other than that it's an easy ticket. This is also the first city I've ever lived in that has specified motorcycle parking...not enough but a pretty good attempt at it.

I ride into Philly and NYC quite a few times a year - If I find a decent spot on the street I pull in, pay the meter and try to leave room for another bike but I make sure that I can't be blocked in. A lot of times I can't find a good spot so I pull into a pay lot. Sometimes I get hassled but that is cause they think I won't wanna pay the full rate but most of the time they let me put it right on the first floor - I usually tip the guy right up front and I have never had a problem.
