RE: When do you wear your chaps?
I have a nice pair of chaps, but I've only worn them a few times as I do feel faintly ridiculous in them. I wore them over Draggin' jeans, the ones with the kevlar in the butt for slide protection, so I did feel somewhat safer wearing them. I disliked the Draggin' jeans in summer, however; sitting on a rough piece of kevlar when it's really hot out isn't a good way to spend a day.
I think I may have solved the problem with a pair of Powertrip leather overpants, however. In the winter I can wear them over thermals, and in the summer over just boxers or regular shorts. They are really not hot or sticky (they're lined with mesh), and if it's really hot I can unzip the legs a little around the boot-top for a little air conditioning.
In the beginning they really flapped around, especially when my feet were on the highway pegs, so I took them to the lady who does alterations at the dry cleaner and for a few bucks she tapered the bottom 12 inches or so of the leg in to an 8.5" circumference at the bottom--just wide enough to comfortably slide over the boot. Now they don't flap, and can't get caught on anything, either.
Works for me

I usually will put my chaps (Brooks leather, 15 years old and...Damn they're still nice)...When the temps get below 50 and I'm gonna be out riding for over 30 minutes....Now and then the wife likes me to wear them....Been a long time, but I think I know where I've got them packed if she's ready.....

Have 'em. Never worn 'em. Below 50 I wear these $20 super dry super warm full zip up both sides ski pants my wife bought. Perfect
