Would use the lip of the sole on the heel to shift up, and of course the bottom edge of the heels to downshift and brake.

One day I'll change up the forward controls of my FLHS and maybe rig up something to get her heel shiftin' 'n braking.
I used to downshift with my heel with my foot on the highway peg of my 1981 FXS. Never upshifted. As to the brake, I always preferred to use my toe; I had a much better touch that way.

If your trouser cuffs are so loose that you catch it on the lever it means that either the cuffs are to loose or at least you should go for a shorter inseam.
Adjusting yourself and your attire to suit your bike is one way to look at it. Others prefer to adjust the bike to suit themselves and their attire.

solve the room issue by installing an extended heal shifter, I believe the one I installed was plus 2 1/4 inches in length and it now is positioned just off the back of the floorboard. Love having the entire floorboard and have gotten used to the heal shifter so it's second nature now.

Since I have multiple bikes...most of them not Harleys...I never bother with the heel shifter on the Road King. I'll probably just take it off. No need to retrain unless you want to for some reason.

I like the heel toe shifter. But that's my preference. Everyone is different.
