Minnesota is a very high tax state, but we get a great rate on motorcycle licences tabs. It cost me a whopping $17 last week to renew my plates.
I switched insurance last year, from Progressive to Markel. A top of the line policy was less than $500. Another benefit we have in Minnesota is that "no fault" insurance laws do not apply to cycles. If the other person causes the accident, they have to pay. That lowers our rate tremendously.

Like I said, the life insurance is built-in the renewal and charge by the province. Here we pay fricken to much for everything...

Just received my licence plate renewal and I'm wondering how much you guys pay in our areas...
I live in Quebec and up here we have to pay for life insurance so the pricing goes like this:
- $86.74 for the licence renewal;
- $480.39 for insurance;
- $4.35 for admin
for a total of $571.48 for about 8 months of riding.

And I thought Illinois was expensive. Not so, I guess. I pay $135 for the plate/sticker renewal. The state mandates that I must have insurance but that can be liability only. My 08 Ultra Classic with full coverage is $421 per year (full coverage is required by HD credit).
Here on Maui in Hawaii my Motorcycle Plate and Registration renewal is a total of $119.56. And it is partially based on vehicle weight. The Break down of all the fees would be:
Our State Fee is: $45.00
Our county Fee is: $43.00
County Weight Tax is: $16.23
State Weight Tax is: $10.33
Maui County Beau Fee is $5.00
This does not include mandatory Insurance, you can not get a vehicle plated or registered without a valid insurance card. I have excellent Insurance with Progressive through Harley-Davidson. My Premium is only $108.00 per Year which I consider a real bargain.
Therefore my actual cost to ride; less fuel and maintenance, food and drink, would be cost of my registration and insurance, a total of: $227.56
By the way, I forgot but there is an annual mandatory vehicle Safety Inspection which is an additional Fee of $20.00 which would make my total $247.56 for my 2009 H-D Sportster XL883L.
