When you take the MSF course you'll take it on a 250 (unless you take it through Harley) You should get a good feel for how that feels. If you end up buying a 250 you won't stay on it more than a month or two and they are a little tougher to sell. Look on Craigslist for a Honda Shadow 750, a suziki blvd c50, or a yahama vstar classic (650), all are wonderful first bikes, plenty of power to get you to freeway speeds even if they are a bit buzzy at those speeds. You can find them all day every day in the mid 2000$ range and they don't really drop below that. I bought a Honda Shadow when I started riding with only 1200 miles on it, rode it for about 4-5k miles and sold it for the same price I bought it for.
