Staggered formations
I enjoy group riding , but when I am riding in a staggered formation, I feel exposed as I am not riding as defensively as if I were riding in single file or solo where I can use the entire side of the road to my advantage.
Riding on the outside left of a staggered formation close to the center of the road on left hand bends or brow of hills can put me in a bad situation, as can riding on the right side when passing side streets etc.
Am I the ony one that feels like this?.

RE: Staggered formations
no. If I am the "road captain" (or leader, whatever), I usually let folks know when we get into the curves that folks need to expand out so the whole road can be used. I don't like being forced into a particular slot when in the twisties.
Going through town I don't mind keeping it tight, being that its a large crowd, the visibility is increased a lot.

RE: Staggered formations
The guys I group ride with follow the two second rule while formation is staggered. This says you ride two seconds distance behind the bikeon your side of the lane. The faster the group goes, the greater the distance becomes. This allows plenty of room for manuevering and reaction time for braking. In the curves, riders naturally use all the lane's width as needed. The guy in the other side of the lane is closer to you but he and you still have the entire lane if needed.
That's why I mostly ride with one or two other bikes. Always staggered though.[8D]

Staggered until road cap says single file....
But always single file upon going into a turn(any) you are allowed and should use the whole lane for your turn.
Tho some of the rather easy turns we stay pretty much staggered.

We ride staggered in most situations, following the 2 second rule. Its safer than riding side by side, and safer than being all strung out. On twisty roads, we always go to single file for the comfort of all riders and thier skill level.
