The day that new riders swallow their pride and learn how to ride on a 250cc for a year instead of the biggest, fastest or trendiest thing on two wheels, that is when motorcycling will be safer for all riders.
Good news,, I think. What's the story behind the helmet in the link ? If the damage was caused by a crash induced skid,, was the rider sliding while standing on his head? Just wondering .
I think there are several reasons contributing to it:
The increase of rider courses to get a license instead of only a road test.
More riders due to folks looking for cheaper travel alternatives in a bad economy.
High gas prices reduce the number of cars on the road.
Just plain luck.
I have been riding since 1964 and I think the awareness of motorcycles has improved a lot, probably because there are so many more of them on the road. The worst time seemed (to me) to be in the 1970s when so many cagers were simply brain-dead. (Anyone who believes in Darwin's theory has never driven in city traffic!)
