Lane splitting (or evading) in North Texas
#11
That towns traffic is pretty serious...its a real nightmare sometimes...like most big cities.
I doubt that any good LEO would care and probably wish they were on their bikes so they could do that and go home quicker!
besides...its still pretty hot in Dallas...no reason to cook in traffic...
I wouldn't lane split (too worried about the nuts taking a swip at you as you pass) but I have done the shoulder thing in Houston on I-45.
I say well played! ride safe...

My biggest concern with the shoulder thing is that someone will pull onto it without looking in their mirrors. Doesn't matter if they do it on purpose or not, the outcome is the same. I'm pretty sure the troopers here would not hesitate to ticket me if they saw it.

My theory about using the shoulder or lane splitting and the cops outside Cali. has always been they can't site what they can't catch and if traffics playing parking lot the cops are just as jacked up as everybody else. Keep the head on a swivel and don't do it very often in the same place or the popo will lay a trap for you if it becomes a predictable habit.

Yep
As far as I know CA, is the only state that allows lane splitting, if done correctly.

Police officer from California checking in: I encourage and support legal lane splitting. It increases the flow of gridlock traffic, and benefits everyone. Heck, most cagers out here will even move over for you. However, I cannot support passing on the shoulder. It's so dangerous, it ain't even funny.

shoulders are for emergency use only. what you did was not lane splitting. there is a solid white line that you have to cross to get to the shoulder...and there is a yellow one on the left shoulder. neither should be crossed under normal circumstances. riding a bike does not give you special privileges to obey the laws that you find fits your circumstances. wait your turn like everyone else. a bike on the shoulder, then a small car, followed by a SUV, and then an 18 wheeler says "why not me to?".
