14 FXDL has exactly 1000 miles on it and now due for 1000 service. I am planning a 200 mile trip this weekend and not sure if I can get that service done in time. Has anyone ran the ODO up to 1200-1500 miles before the 1000 service?

Otherwise I need to somehow get bike in or cancel the ride.

 

You can't change your own oil?

 

Not everybody can, or wants to, or has the tools/equipment to, or the time to.

To the OP - I asked the very same question once to 3 different techs, and they told me that as long as I check the oil and made sure it was good, a couple hundred miles won't hurt anything. Your mileage may vary, but I'd consult your local mechanic - I'd bet that you'll be just fine.

 

1000 mile service is more than just an oil change anyway. 1200 is ok. 1500 is pushing it but still ok.

 

Go for your 1000 mile service or at 1001 mile your bike will turn into a pumpkin.



Nah... you can extend till 1500 easy!

 

I guess it depends on if something happens or not after the 1k expires.
I cant imagine they would be so picky...but you never know when it comes to warranty work.


I did ask my dealer and they said it wasn't an issue if you went over...just not a few thousand miles over!

Im only reading from my extended service plan and I don't know about the 24 month plan.
The extended service (section 7 of the contract)
under A: required maintenance
"it is your responsibility to maintain and service your motorcycle according to the service and maintenance schedule"
it further points out that basically if you fail to do the service and something takes place that they may restrict or deny a claim.


I never made a claim on a warranty...this is my 1st ext plan. I don't know how picky they are or if they really care about this.

 

Id talk to your dealership. I asked mine and they said that 300 over is no biggie. I ended up changing the oil, checking critical fasteners myself at 1K and having my indy check it out around 1400. Do all my own now & indy gives it a good looking over when I fork over the few extra bones to have him change my rear tire. The guy is awesome

 

It shouldn't take more than an hour to change the fluids and filter. Very few tools are needed.

For my bike it's 3 quarts of oil, an oil filter and a quart of tranny/primary fluid.

Most of the time is waiting for the fluids to drain. I'm hardly a master mechanic so these fluid changes can be done by practically anyone.

Of course the bike won't explode at 1001 miles, but i'm a stickler for those things.

Let's not forget that during that hour the OP can look over the rest of the bike.

 

I think my bike was about 200 miles over when I took it in for its first service. They said it was no big deal.

 

I can change oil but my understanding is they do a lot of adjustments and check for any issues throughout the bike (maybe thats all BS). Besides, theres a recall on the bike that I put off until this service. The most cable stretch in throttle and clutch happens first 1000 miles so I rather them do all the troubleshooting.
